What is the Board of Education and what does it do?

Answer: 

The Board of Education is commissioned by the Pastoral Council of St. Mary's. The Board, in cooperation with the Pastor, is responsible for all aspects of the formal secular educational programs of the parish - designed for the benefit of parishioners of all ages. In reviewing and approving the educational programs, it must ensure that the intent and spirit of the policies laid down by the Archdiocesan Board of Education are followed. Some of the Board of Education's functions and duties include:

  • to grow together as a Board through prayer, the study of appropriate Church documents & educational publications, and participation in professional workshops & in-service programs.
  • to approve the raising of revenues for educational programs when the need and desirability of such assistance is determined.
  • to review existing educational programs and future goals & plans of the Directors of the Parish educational programs. 
  • to make recommendations relating to the planning, operating, and maintenance of educational facilities and equipment. 
  • to field questions from parishioners regarding issues that pertain to the Board of Education, as well as to bring thoughts, comments, and concerns of parishioners to the attention of the Board and other parish committees.

What does the Board of Education look for in a candidate?

Answer:

  • a person willing to attend one meeting per month (on the 2nd Tuesday of every month)
  • a person whose views on life and Catholic education are such that his/her presence will enrich the Board of Education and contribute to the spiritual health of the parish
  • a person who is willing to take on work and one who can be relied upon to complete a job he/she has undertaken
  • a person who is discreet and able to keep confidences
  • a person whose life reflects uncompromising faith in the ideals of Catholic education
  • a person willing to participate on other parish committees such as the Finance Committee, and be the Board representative for Pastoral Council

How long of a term would I be serving?

Answer:

Candidates serve a term of 3 years.
