“We adore You, O Christ, and we praise You, because by Your holy Cross, You have redeemed the world.”
What is Perpetual Adoration?
Adoration of the Blessed Sacrament is a time we take to worship God in the person of Jesus Christ, who is truly present in the Eucharistic host. People will often spend an hour in prayer with the Blessed Sacrament, which is kept either in the Tabernacle or exposed for all to see on the altar. These hours are called “Holy Hours." Jesus is waiting for us to spend time with Him in this special way. In the Gospel of John, Jesus says “I am the Bread of Life," which comes from Heaven. He says that “whoever eats this bread will live forever.” In the celebration of the Mass, small circles of unleavened bread called “hosts” are Consecrated; changed from bread into the real Body, Blood, Soul, and Divinity of Jesus Christ. We call these consecrated hosts the “Eucharist” or “Blessed Sacrament.” The hosts are no longer just bread, but actually the Person of Jesus Christ, physically present. At Communion, practicing Catholics receive these hosts to consume the “Bread of Life," allowing us to be united to Jesus and be transformed by His Grace.
At St. Mary’s, we have coordinated 24 hours of Adoration seven days a week since 1953. This means that we have had a list of individuals willing to sign up for an hour with Jesus around the clock, every hour of every day, for over half a century.
Why go to Adoration?
How Can You Participate in Perpetual Adoration?
We have several opportunities available for coming to pray in the Church with the Lord. We have an Adoration Coordinator who oversees several Adoration Captains, responsible for organizing and filling hours for different times during the week.
You are welcome to contact our Adoration Coordinator to discuss Adoration in the following ways:
- Regular Hour: Are you able to commit to praying with Jesus one hour a week in Adoration? We do have some hours that need additional adorers to sign up, but you are also welcome to sign up for any hour that fits your schedule.
- Substitute: If you are unable to commit to an hour each week, please consider acting as a substitute, if you able to fill in for an hour if someone is unable to make theirs. You can sign up as a substitute with a list of hours you could occasionally fill if needed.
- Making a visit: If you are not able to commit to a regular time of adoration or as a substitute, but would still like to make a visit to the church to adore Jesus, you are welcome to do so. Please contact our Adoration Coordinator for more information.

There is always a need for permanent adorers. Please prayerfully consider volunteering for an hour of your own or being a 2nd adorer. There are many benefits of having/being a 2nd adorer.
